With no outdoor recreation, an evening regimen was in place where half the prison population stayed in their cells while the other half went to the gymnasium. The next night it was reversed. It was a predictable and established routine.

One night, as half the prison was coming back from the gymnasium, a guard had words with the crew of nutbar Turks and one went after him.

The guard threw down his keys to the dome and shouted, “Riot,” whereupon the two guards in the dome ran for their lives through the outside entrance to the staff area, also screaming, “Riot! Riot!” They locked the door behind them, leaving the prisoners with the keys and in full control of the dome and the prison. So in reality, it was guards, not prisoners, who triggered the infamous riot. (more…)

Untwisted – Chapter 5

I did my full twenty-two month sentence, most of it in solitary confinement. As a matter of fact, I was released from solitary confinement directly onto the street.

I believe I was on the street in Toronto for a grand total of fifty five days. I immediately began doing drugs again and got so strung out on methamphetamines, I don’t think I slept at all during the fifty-five days.

I was back to carrying a gun and got involved in a couple of bank robberies and a jewellery store heist. I knew the police would be looking for me, so I left Toronto and spent some time in Montreal.

Sure enough, when I came back, there was a warrant out for my arrest with a ‘Do not approach; this man is known to be armed and very dangerous’ caution attached. I knew nothing of this and walked into my apartment. (more…)

Teens, the media, and Serge LeClerc

According to a survey done by the Kaiser Family Foundation, American young people, eight to 18- 53 hours a week – more than a working day and more than the time these kids spend in school. Because most of them multitask, they manage to pack 10 hours and 45 minutes worth of media content into those seven hours and 38 minutes.

Those figures fit with Canadian statistics used by Serge LeClerc, former Montreal drug lord who, having rehabilitated himself, is an MLA, an author, and an eagerly sought after inspirational speaker. He spoke to high school students and to community members in Foam Lake recently.

He told the high school students that from kindergarten to Grade 12, kids spend 20,000 hours watching TV. During the same time, they spend 10,000 hours in the classroom. (more…)
