My Trip to Nataushish

12 Dec

As many of will know, the fall Sitting of the House ended Thursday December 3rd after a very draining 7 weeks. I stayed in Regina instead of returning to my home in Saskatoon to catch a plane to Edmonton that evening. Friday I was to give to two talks in the high school in Athabasca, Alberta (and during which they has 3 other schools join them). As many communities in North America, they are experiencing an increase of drug use, out of control alcohol use, devastating STD rise and crisis pregnancies as well as ever increasing ‘bullying’. Athabasca is 2 1/2 hours north of Edmonton – a great community – and my talks went well. I was suppose to fly out Friday evening back to Regina to pick up my car at the airport parking lot and drive back to Saskatoon in order to be ready to catch a plane to Nataushish (2 hour plane flight north of Goose Bay Labrador) to speak at the prison in Goose Bay Sunday night, and then the youth during the day and the adults Monday night in Nataushish. As we began to leave Athabasca, we entered into the storm front that was battering the southern part of Alberta and Saskatchewan. (more…)

Indianapolis Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast

30 Oct

gary-varvel-serge-2-editI have just returned home from the Indianapolis Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast where I was the keynote speaker. It was a fantastic event, and I was welcomed by Mayor Ballard and the city of Indianapolis with open arms. It was a wonderful opportunity to share what God has done in my life and how He can move effectively and faithfully in the lives of the 480 businessmen and women who were in attendance. I am thankful for the books and DVD’s we were able to sell and give to previous offenders. I always appreciate such speaking opportunities.

And these opportunities can present numerous challenges because the Enemy is hard at work trying to keep me from telling my testimony. In fact, this particular trip presented more speed bumps than I ever expected; bumps so severe that I almost didn’t make it to Indianapolis.

Approximately 3 weeks ago, I was going through Portal North Dakota when I was asked to show a copy of the book I was taking through the border on my way to a speaking engagement at a juvenile facility. I was bringing 120 books to give to the kids in the facility as a gift. After recognizing me as the person on the cover on the book, I then spent the next 2 and 1/2 hours being interrogated, physically searched, finger printed which came with a mug shot. My car was also torn apart and searched. I was denied entry because Homeland Security and the USA does not recognize “pardons from a foreign country”. I was handed a load of forms and told to fill them out and supply what was required within the package for application for a waiver. (more…)
